Assessment for Learning & Special Educational Needs
Assessment
Every child at St.
John’s is monitored for achievement. All teachers keep records of each
child’s achievements and experiences in all of the National Curriculum
areas. More formal assessments are conducted in Literacy, Numeracy and
Science and scores are monitored to ensure progression across the
school. Teachers use this valuable information to inform the next steps
in individual and group learning and to set next step learning targets.
Teachers feedback to
parents about each child’s achievement through Termly progress reports
and parents evenings. Reports and Assessments are stored in a file for
each child and passed onto their next teacher or school.
In their first year
at school children are assessed by their reception class teacher and a
Foundation stage profile is completed. At the end of year 2 and year 6
all children are assessed using the statutory standard assessment tasks
(SAT’S) the results of which are passed on to parents with the Summer
Term report. The children at St. John’s also set non-statutory
Assessment Tasks at the end of years 3 to 5.
St John’s uses an
excel based computer program called Target Tracker to monitor the
results of these assessments.
If you have any
concerns about your child’s progress during the year the teacher will be
pleased to make an appointment to discuss this with you.
Special
Needs
Most children have a
special educational need at some point during their school career and it
is important to recognise and address the need as soon as possible.
Needs may be related to emotional difficulties, learning or behaviour.
The school will have
regard to the SEN Code of Practice when considering each child’s needs.
Parents are informed, consulted and involved at all times.
Children for whom
there is a concern are supported initially by the Class Teacher who will
provide differentiated work and monitor progress. If there is no
evidence of progress the class teacher will discuss the matter with the
SEN Co-ordinator and if necessary the child will have an Individual
Education Plan. Wherever possible children will receive extra help from
the school support staff.
If needs persist
permission may be sought to involve other professionals eg. School
nurse, speech and Language therapist and Educational Psychologist.
