This year we were also joined by pupils from Loyola Prep School and the Member of Parliament for Epping Forest Mrs Eleanor Laing. As ever the children should be commended on their exemplary behaviour and attitude. Today Isabella Henry, A Year Six Pupil with a brother in the Royal Marines, organised a very impressive cake and wrist band sale which raised just under 200 for Help for Heroes. They look forward to meeting you. Swine Flu Although the predicted impact of Swine Flu has yet to affect St Johns I have spoken to the children about the need to take basic precautions. These include: Bringing a paper handkerchief to school each day ( additional tissues will be available in the classroom) Washing their hands thoroughly, for 30 seconds, after going to the toilet and throughout the day Minimising the spread of germs by helping to wipe door handles and surfaces with antibacterial cleaners Can I ask you to please support the school by reinforcing these basic precautions at home and ensure that you child brings a tissue to school with them every day. Your help is greatly appreciated. School Places and Planning Applications Many of you will have seen the recent news reports in the national press concerning the expected shortage of primary school places in London over the next few years. It is inevitable that Buckhurst Hill will feel the ripple of this shortage given our close proximately to London. It is therefore disappointing, to say the least, to still receive planning applications intent on demolishing family houses and replacing them with flats. The current school infrastructure in Buckhurst Hill has increasing trouble coping with the recent building developments that have been allowed, let alone any new ones. I feel very strongly that it is now time for us, along with other organisations in Buckhurst Hill, to take a stand against this over development of our community which will ultimately disadvantage the legitimate families of Buckhurst Hill.
