Maya Specialist Visits Year 5

On Tuesday 19th September Year 5 were lucky to have Dr. Diane Davis, the only Maya specialist in the UK, visit St John’s to talk about the Maya Civilisation.

Dr Diane described, in detail, her yearly trips to Guatemala to work with the local people excavating ancient Maya sites. Her exploits and pictures of snakes, spiders and underground treasures were intriguing and informative.

The children also had the opportunity to handle artefacts, from a jade death mask to an ancient pestle and mortar used to crush cocoa beans which were used to make the drink of Kings – Hot Chocolate.

A fact filled and fascinating morning enjoyed by everyone. Pictures can be found on the gallery.
